The proposed scheme in Foleshill will provide 50 apartments for older people on an intercultural basis on the site of a former social club.

The location of the scheme is situated at the heart of the city%26#39;s vibrant multi-cultural community and will provide a much-needed facility for a growing elderly migrant population.

The Accord Group will undertake the development while Ashram Housing Association, a member of the Accord Group, will lead the scheme management.

Councillor Shabbir Ahmed, cabinet member (Community Services) said: %26quot;This is a housing scheme for older people in the heart of Foleshill that will meet the needs of its diverse communities. This has long been identified as an important objective and this proposal now presents an ideal opportunity to make this a reality.

%26quot;The scheme is likely to attract significant interest from the various communities in the area. The proposed site is well located with established facilities and networks making it easily accessible from the city.

%26quot;Through partnership working we now have the ideal opportunity to introduce this scheme in Foleshill and we look forward to taking this project forward with Accord and the Ashram Housing Association.%26quot;

Jas Bains, chief executive, Ashram Housing Association, added: %26quot;The number of older people from the black, minority and ethnic population is set to increase ten fold between now and 2030 and the existing provision across the country is totally inadequate. This development is an important contribution in a city at the heart of multi-cultural Britain.%26quot;

The proposals will be on display for residents to see and comment on.

During the consultation event, local residents will get the opportunity to view the proposed plans and raise any concerns with officers.

The plans are set to go before the Planning Committee for a final decision on 21 February and if given the go ahead work could begin on site before the end of March.
