Curtain Comes Down Early For Cubs In Game 3

Filed Under Country Curtain | Posted on October 5, 2008

This one happened in the first inning and was the worst possible nightmare for the Cubs. Already facing a must-win situation, the Cubs quickly fell behind 2-0, taking the wind out of their sails.

And in came two runs as Loney smacked Rich Harden’s fourth pitch into the right-field corner. It didn’t matter that Matt Kemp flied out, the Dodgers already set the wheels in motion for a sweep and were brimming with sudden renewed confidence that they could pull this off.

Three failed at-bats with runners in scoring position in the first four innings left six runners on base, continuing a Cubs trend of the first two games when they left 14 runners stranded.

The failures also gave Hiroki Kuroda, weakest of the three Dodgers starters, a feeling in his playoff debut that he belonged.

The first at-bat came in the first inning with runners on first and second with two outs. Batting fifth, Geovany Soto busted his bat while grounding out to third base.

Although they fell behind early, the Cubs at least didn’t give this one away with errors and sloppy, lethargic play. But they will have an entire winter to mull over what happened in three straight games after the regular season produced the best record in the National League.
