Curtain Falls On Veteran Act

LILY of Laguna won’t be entertaining the old folk any more, and neither will Al Jolson be crying for his Mammy.

Variety Entertainers will put on their final show next week, ending a 23 years of providing music, poetry and skits in nursing homes and other aged facilities around the Border.

It’s not that the group is growing older, but rather that they have dwindled to five women and four men, all past 70.

Fun was the driving force for Variety Entertainers and their predecessor, the School for Seniors Singers, which had Olga Venham in charge of productions.

Lily of Laguna is the group’s theme song.

In their final show at Age Concern next Thursday, December 18, they will, of course, sing We’ll Meet Again.
