Disney’s High School Musical is set to take the stage at Rotorua’s Civic Theatre from Friday, featuring plenty of young local talent.
Rotorua Musical Theatre’s production secretary, Richard Nairn, says more than 100 local students auditioned for the 35 roles in the production, making the right choice a real struggle. “We have a lot of great talent in Rotorua. The cast is made up of mostly local school students and a few very young-looking adults,” he said.
The Rotorua Musical Theatre company has been working since July last year to get the hit musical on stage.
Directed by Susan Mumby, High School Musical is expected to appeal to all ages. Mr Nairn said the storyline was a modern take on popular 1970s film Grease.
“It’s a light love story about kids trying to make their own high school musical,” he said. “Troy is a basketball player (a jock) and meets a brainiac, Gabriel, while on holiday. They end up going to the same school and auditioning for parts in the schools musical.”
