Vets Park Pine Curtain Begs For A Leafy Compromise

That’s the root of the issue for 47 people who petitioned the Bay City Commission yet again to remove 15 or 16 pine trees along John F. Kennedy Drive in Bay City.
This request has become a regular rite, city officials say. The City Commission denied the request early this month.
People who crave a view and the city could split the cost of replacing the pine curtain with something a little more transparent, such as pear trees or maples. The deciduous trees would serve double duty, being free of leaves for more than half a year, giving residents a nice view, and bearing leaves in the summer months, when the park sees the most use.
Such a solution might put an end to the almost annual request, and city refusal, to remove the trees.
Both sides could bend a little, like the trees at the root of this argument. By their leaves, different types of trees just might be the answer.
