YHN, which looks after Newcastles 31,000 council homes, is starting an End of Tenancy Incentive scheme that will see householders receive one-off cash payments if they leave their houses spotless and in a good state of repair when they move out.
The idea behind the scheme is to reduce the amount of money and time YHN spends cleaning up properties before they can be re-let.
During 2006-7 YHN%26#39;s cleaning bill came to almost %26pound;100,000 while roughly %26pound;270,000 was spent on property clearance.
Similar schemes have proved successful with other housing associations and councils across the country reporting reduced cleaning costs.
The incentive will also cut the amount of time it takes to re-let a property.
The initiative will be for a six-month trial period. If successful it will become permanent.
