V70: the next generation

VOLVO’S third-generation V70 wagon will be in showrooms
soon.
The V70 has been on sale since 1997, when it replaced the 950.
It was discontinued for about six months between 2005 and 2006.
This time the Swedish maker will release only one model - a
3.0-litre (210kW, 400Nm) turbocharged six-cylinder, priced from
$67,950.
Volvo says the new V70 covers the 0-100km dash in 7.2 seconds
and has an average fuel consumption of 11.3 litres/100km.
The new all-wheel-drive wagon comes with a six-speed automatic
transmission. Standard safety equipment includes stability control,
front, side and curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, anti-whiplash
protection system, flashing emergency brake lights, automatic
activation of hazard lights following a crash and a booster seat
for children.
The V70 is also available with a collision warning system for
$3950 (combined with adaptive cruise control) that alerts the
driver to a possible collision with a car ahead via an audible tone
and lights. If the system decides a crash is unavoidable, the car
automatically brakes to reduce the force of the impact.
Other equipment includes cornering bi-xenon headlights, front
and rear parking sensors, 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing
wipers, wood trim, a six-disc CD player, heated front seats,
self-opening tailgate and a lockable storage area under the luggage
compartment.
Volvo says the distance from front to rear passengers has been
increased by 21mm, rear leg room has grown by 48mm and rear knee
room is up by 21mm. Front shoulder width has been increased by
30mm.
The V70 has Volvo’s driver information system to prevent the
driver from becoming distracted by irrelevant information. The
system monitors steering wheel and accelerator pedal movements,
turn indicator usage and brake application and it delays
information (such as incoming phone calls or SMS messages). For
$1200 the V70 can also be equipped with a system that alerts the
driver if there is a car in his or her blind spot.
