Curtain to rise on Carlton project

Following a failed redevelopment bid and a compulsory purchase order, the wheels are finally in motion for a €1.25 billion redevelopment project at the site of the Carlton cinema on O’Connell Street in Dublin.
The long-running saga surrounding the Carlton cinema site on Dublin’s O’Connell street took one step nearer to conclusion, with the publication of plans last week by Joe O’Reilly’s Chartered Land for an ambitious mixed-use development.
Part of the site has lain vacant since 1979, and the cinema itself closed in 1994. The site, which has already been the basis of one failed redevelopment bid, will now form the core of a complex that will stretch back to Moore Street and run between Henry Street and Parnell Street. It is slated to create two new streets and three public squares, and will include 108 apartments, 109 shops, a large department store and 17 restaurants.
