Pele To Raise Curtain On Banks Statue

Banks, who famously produced what has been dubbed the greatest save ever against Pele during the 1970 World Cup, was clearly delighted even just by the thought behind the bronze tribute, which will be beside a memorial to another Stoke City and England great, Sir Stanley Matthews, which has stood outside the stadium ground since October 2001.

“I’m proud, honoured and flattered,” said Banks, now 70. “Normally they only erect statues for people who are dead.

“The artist has done a fantastic job. He even asked me which way I tied up my boots to get the details right.”

“It’s fantastic and of course being alongside Sir Stanley, who I met, knew and played against and coupled with Stoke City getting promoted.

“It was organised before they got promoted so it really has fallen together beautifully.”

There will also be a football match between a Banks XI and a Pele XI to mark the occasion, with former footballing stars such as John Barnes, Ian Rush,  Luther Blissett, Jan Molby, Peter Bonetti, Matt Le Tissier and Mike Pejic confirmed to appear as celebrities such as actor James Nesbitt and musicians from Kasabian and The Twang.
