Southland fixture good buildup for season: coach

The game has been scheduled as a curtain-raiser to the Otago Nuggets National Basketball League game against the Waikato Pistons at Stadium Southland in Invercargill.
Southland coach Richard Dickel said yesterday Saturday’s fixture would provide his charges with a good buildup to bigger events later in the season.
Southland will this year hold home court advantage for the South Island regional divisional tournament in July as it attempts to book a place at the national divisional championships in Levin in August.
Saturday will be the first time most of Southland’s leading men’s players take to the court this season, with the local club competition starting next Tuesday.
Dickel hoped a return match in Dunedin would be played against the Nuggets Academy team to give Southland two tough early season fixtures.
This will depend on the finish of the Southern Steel netball team’s home game against the Canterbury Tactix, also to be played at Stadium Southland.
Southland will look to Mekatu Dell who was named in the tournament team at the nationals last year and the experienced Richard Hamilton to spark the team on Saturday.
