UA putting up McKale curtain

The curtain is being raised on something new at McKale Center, which means a curtain is coming down.
Installation is under way on a sectional curtain that will deploy from the rafters, cutting off the seating above the middle concourse, creating a cozier and louder environment for volleyball matches, gymnastics meets and, possibly, women’s basketball.
“The concept is great,” Rubio said. “It will be exciting for us because it will just be more intimate.”
Rubio has long pushed for a setting that will better get the blood pumping. He struck out with the idea of turning Bear Down Gym into a volleyball venue. Adding seating to a new basketball practice facility, which will be completed this fall, was also a no-go.
“Ever since I have been here, there has been talk of putting up a curtain that dissects the court in half,” Rubio said. “UCLA does that with Pauley Pavilion. I didn’t like that idea.”
Then he floated the idea of the all-around curtain about a year ago.
“Dave Rubio loves it,” said Steve Kozachik, UA’s assistant athletic director for facilities and capital projects. “His goal is to make it look like a cave.”
