Canada Vanity, thy name is . . .

First it was the Conservatives’ 2008 calendar. Now it’s the government lobby in the Commons that’s been plastered with photographs of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Behind the curtains on the government side, photos of all former Conservative prime ministers John A. Macdonald, John Diefenbaker, Brian Mulroney are gone. In their place. it’s wall-to-wall Harper, reportedly, in various costumes and settings. Was the makeover to show off the handiwork of Harper’s ever-present makeup artist? Or had someone deleting all the Mulroney shots given the ban on any Conservative truck with the ex-prime minister decided to replace the whole lot? The ‘08 calendar, sent to loyal donors, is likewise rich in PM pics. News of the new vanity display leaked out to media this week, largely because folks like Green Leader Elizabeth May and others had access to the lobby when students staged a model Parliament in the Commons during the holidays. AWOL LIBERALS The House of Commons resumed Monday after nearly six weeks off and 35 of 94 Liberal seats were empty the first day back. The absenteeism was so glaring that media and bloggers noticed. Party whip Karen Redman (Kitchener Centre) was quoted as also being taken aback until she learned that two flights from the East Coast had been cancelled, and several MPs had called in sick or had already booked off.WRAPPED IN REDWhen MP after MP exited the Liberal caucus sporting red scarves (Michael Ignatieff’s signature accessory), some wondered if another leadership battle had broken out. Sadly, for journalists who miss the old Liberal infighting, the scarves were a unifying symbol, sold last week to raise money for the Ladybug Foundation, which helps the homeless. Even true-blue Conservatives wore them to question period that day.BEAM HIM UPTaser International CEO Tom Smith put in a star turn at a parliamentary committee. Explaining his vision of a less-than-lethal weapon alternative for police officers, Smith said he and his brother, who founded the company, grew up watching Star Wars and Star Trek. That may also explain Smith’s freakishly white Hollywood smile.
