Mistakes were the difference as St. Helena High’s varsity boys soccer team saw its season end with a 2-0 loss to visiting University High School last Wednesday night in the opening round of the North Coast Section playoffs.
“That’s really what good teams do,” Saints coach Ozzie Gallegos said, noting that the Red Devils who scored a goal in each half made the most of their opportunities.
“I think just the fact that they are who they are and where they’ve been, basically with just two quick strikes that’s really what did us in.”
The loss dropped the Saints’ final overall record to 13-11. Despite the defeat, Gallegos praised his team’s performance this season and is openly excited about the future.
“I mean I’m proud of these guys. Considering what we went through this season with having probably the second-toughest schedule in league according to the teams that, the ups and downs this season I mean you can’t ask anything more from them. I mean they played their hearts out and we had opportunities,” Gallegos said, referring specifically to a pair of corner kicks in the first half.
“And we made some big-time strides against University, from being blown away, from being out of it last year to all of a sudden being in it this year. This year we just lacked a little bit of offense. But University had better watch out in the next couple of years, because we’re just getting started. Like I said, I can’t be more proud of what these guys had to do this season.”
Gallegos also praised the individual performances of senior midfielder Ewen Hungerford, senior defender Tony Manzo and senior goalie Antonio Perez.
