Curtain Goes Up On Gilford Children’s Auction

Gilford Firefighter Dominic DeCarli has been working at the auction for at least five years and it falls to him to “build the board” or decide which six items will be placed on each board.
Each board contains six different donated items that appear on the television screen at the same time and are available for bidding.
It involves grouping six seemingly very different items together and continually creating intriguing groupings throughout the six days of the auction, which raises funds for local charitable organizations. It also means combining items with different prices and different tastes on the same board.
Making his job a little bit easier this year is the new computer program written by R.J. Harding of the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion.
“Some day, we’ll be able to bid online,” said DeCarli, who said the program will also help them expand the auction. He said many people find it hard to listen to the radio or watch television especially during work hours.
Although the Internet auction is still in the future, DeCarli said he really enjoys the television and radio broadcasts because the two conventional mediums provide “the good old community spirit we know now.”
