Doomsday looms on Maunaloa Theater drops its final curtain on Thursday

Given the sudden Molokai Ranch closure, it seems ironic that “Doomsday†is now playing at Hollywood Theaters’ Maunaloa Town Cinemas. Kitchen Curtain Because of Molokai Ranch’s decision last Monday, the theater and its 10 employees have found themselves looking for jobs elsewhere.
“[This will be] a ghost town, with bored kids doing any kind stuff,†said current usher, Blue Bulfer, 20, of the closure. As he looked around Maunaloa, glancing in the direction of the General Store, he added he will now have to look for work in Kaunakakai, since there is nowhere left to apply in Maunaloa. He said he might also consider inquiring about potential landscaping opportunities at the condos Kitchen Curtain.
Since its opening day in October 1997, General Manager Lester Keanini has been serving the community. He sadly noted it is ironic that he’s been there for the entire life cycle of the establishment. “We finally get a movie theater here after 20, 25 years and 10 years later they close it down Kitchen Curtain,†Keanini added.
The closure not only affects him, he said, but also those seeking entertainment after dark.
“They really did not want to close this location, because it’s the only form of entertainment on the island,†he said. He explained that the relationship between Molokai Ranch and the theater was initially a mutually beneficial one. He said he is unable to understand the sudden closing of the curtain.
“The whole lease deal between Molokai Ranch and Hollywood Theatres was a joint cooperation,†he noted. Keanini said he is uncertain of whether the Hollywood Theatres will be able to relocate elsewhere on the island. The theatre will officially close its door April 3. The theater will welcome the community to talk story and share potluck this Thursday at its last performance. Kitchen Curtain Channel 9 News plans to attend.
