Ironmen Close The Curtain

The Ironmen, wrestling injuries among key players throughout the season and leaning heavily on sophomore and junior starters, became a tight brotherhood of devoted athletes as the weeks went by and showed clear potential of extending their season by at least a few games.
But the reality of hard-nosed football and thin numbers seemed to pay its toll on Mancelona, as the Emeralds slipped by in an evenly-matched fight.
“Manistique was a good team,” Ironmen coach Dan Derrer said. “We were right in the game, had just gotten the momentum back, we had scored and kicked off and a couple plays later Greg (Blanco) got hurt. You could kind of sense a let down after that.”
Coming on the heels of that drive, Mancelona senior quarterback Greg Blanco took the field on defense for Manistique’s next possession and came up with a tackle for the Ironmen.
He also came up with a concussion, which removed him from the fray and eventually sent him to the hospital.
Soon after Blanco left the field for the final time of his high school career, Manistique struck again for another seven points to end the first half.
Nick Lockman stepped in at quarterback for Mancelona for the remainder of the afternoon, with Nick Boucard filling in at safety, and both played well according to Derrer.
Ironmen fans that made the journey were, once again, there for a team that had inspired them.
