Alex Rodriguez refused to address allegations by Jose Canseco, who claims he introduced the three-time MVP to a steroids dealer. It’s over as far as I’m concerned, Rodriguez said yesterday after his New York Yankees lost 4-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies. No further comment on the matter. I’m just excited to be playing baseball. In the book, Vindicated: Big Names, Big Liars, and The Battle to Save Baseball, Canseco claimed he introduced Rodriguez to a steroids dealer named Max. Excerpts from the book, slated for publication on April 1, were posted on deadspin.com before being removed yesterday. Canseco wrote that Rodriguez approached him years ago and asked where one might acquire steroids. During an interview to be broadcast tomorrow by ABC’s Nightline, Canseco said he won’t produce evidence to back his claim. The timing’s not right, Canseco said, according to excerpts released by ABC. Let’s see how Alex reacts. Let’s see if they all call me a liar again. How’s that for you? Let’s see if all of a sudden they’re going to call me a liar again. Yankees officials aren’t concerned about a potential distraction. Alex is one of the guys who can focus on the job at hand, New York manager Joe Girardi said. TOKYO SPLIT: One day after Emil Brown made a costly baserunning mistake, his three-run homer in the third inning led Oakland over the Boston Red Sox 5-1 yesterday and gave the Athletics a split of their season-opening, two-game series. Following Major League Baseball’s third curtain-raising series in Japan, the teams headed back to the United States on 10-hour flights across the Pacific. PETTITTE ON TRACK: Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte threw 36 pitches during a 10-minute bullpen session yesterday and remains on target to start the third or fourth game of the regular season. Pettitte originally was to start New York’s second game against Toronto on Tuesday but was pushed back due to back spasms. It makes me feel good that I got through that and I felt good, Pettitte said. RAMIREZ A ROYAL: Right-hander Ramon Ramirez was acquired by the Kansas City Royals from the Colorado Rockies yesterday for a player to be named. The 26-year-old Ramirez, once one of the top prospects in Colorado’s system, set team rookie reliever records with a 3.46 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 61 appearances in 2006. Associated Press
