Tributes pour in for Rangers’ McColl

RANGERS’ chief executive Martin Bain has led the tributes to former Rangers player and captain Ian McColl, who died on Friday, in his 82nd year, after a lengthy illness.
“He was a magnificent Rangers player, a key member of the famous ‘Iron Curtain‘ defence and the club sends its condolences to Ian’s family,” he said.
Sensationally sacked to be replaced by part-time manager Jock Stein of Celtic on the eve of an end-of-season trip to Finland and Poland, McColl became manager of Sunderland, but after three years without success he was sacked and returned to civil engineering.
He suffered a massive stroke some years ago and his last years were spent in Canniesburn Hospital, Glasgow. He is survived by his widow, Jessie, son Ian and daughter Aileen.
The SFA chief executive Gordon Smith said: “Ian McColl was a wonderful footballer for club and country.
“He had one of the best records as Scotland boss and was in charge for some memorable victories – notably the win at Wembley and the fantastic result against Spain in Madrid. Everyone at the Scottish FA passes on their condolences to Ian’s friends and family at this sad time.”
