A cast of 70 local students, parents, dancers and actors will take to the stage this weekend as The Dancers Studio presents the second annual performance of The Nutcracker at the Heydel Fine Arts Center on the Cumberland University campus.
The ballet opens with a grand party. The Staulbounds are hosting a Christmas party at their home. Immediately you are drawn into the Victorian era, where the women are dressed in luxurious ball gowns, the men gallantly in top hats and coats, the children in their finest party attire. As the narration unfolds, you feel the excitement of the Staulbound children, Clara and Fritz. You meet an eccentric uncle. You see toys come to life. There are dancing dolls, toy soldiers and mice and even a Christmas tree that grows before your eyes.
Clara falls asleep and begins to dream of toys and candy and snow. You are swept away in the elegance of the beautiful dancers as they pirouette through snow that magically cascades from the sky onto the stage.
